Getting Started With Herb Gardening
Herb gardening may actually be one of the most fulfilling things you can get your hands dirty with. Unfortunately, the task of setting up your own garden may be faced with difficult challenges during the first few stages, especially on the planning stages. Questions like the kind of herb you’ll plant in your garden or just how many different varieties should I start with are only some of the things which you will need to consider during this phase.
To make it easier for you, here are three tips to help you select your first herbs:
Firstly, choose perennials or perennial herbs. Perennial herbs are those which keep coming back after the first time you plant them. Most who are just starting out with their herb gardens choose those herbs which are commonly used, like basil for instance. Unfortunately, these are annuals or annual herbs. They grow only in a certain season and require a lot of work to maintain them. This may seem demanding and may end up frustrating for first timers. So I advise that you stick with perennial herbs for starters like mint, chives, and catnip to name a few. These herbs do not require so much attention and caring unlike annual herbs.
Secondly, I suggest that you pick out those herbs which are often used in the kitchen, such as, parsley, sage, and oregano. The feeling it gives you when you go out to your garden and harvest a few herbs to use for the dish that you’re cooking is very fulfilling and highly motivating. This will make you feel proud of the hard work you have put in to establish your fresh herb garden, and you will feel as though, your cooking ingredients have been given to you for free.
Lastly, pick out those herbs that are not only perennial or useful in the kitchen but have many different uses as well, like catnip as natural mosquito repellants. The very point of planting your own herb garden is that you can harvest those herbs which you need at a moment’s notice without having to bother yourself in going out to your local grocery store and paying for these same herbs. This not only saves you time but money as well!
