Growing Herbs in Pots

Posted on June 29th, 2012 by admin in Herb Garden Ideas

Successfully growing herbs is not limited to an outdoor garden or veggie patch. The beauty of growing herbs is that they can be grown almost anywhere, including indoors in pots or containers. They can be grown on your window sill, in window boxes (indoor or outdoor) or in hanging baskets in your patio.

Growing herbs in pots or containers is no more difficult than growing herbs in an outdoor area or garden. Indoor herb gardens however do need similar growing conditions as herbs that are grown in the garden. Sunlight, soil and water are the three main ingredients that all plants need to grow successfully. Whether plants are grown indoors or in a garden, herbs are no exception. Sunlight is vital to growing any type of plant including herbs. Herbs grown in a kitchen or any other room in your home should be placed in a position where they will receive the best kind of sunlight.

Different types of herbs have different light requirements but, for the most part, they all need a sunny location. Propagation light kits (grow lamps or fluorescent lamps) provide an easy, effective and economical way to simulate natural light conditions for your plants that will help to keep your herb garden thriving all year round.

Herbs also need a well drained and lightly rich soil to grow in. For herbs that are grown in containers, add two parts of sterilized potting soil with one part coarse sand or perlite. To ensure your herb plants have good drainage you will also need to place about an inch of gravel at the bottom of each pot. Herbs grown indoors in pots should also be supplemented with a teaspoon of lime per 5-inch pot as this will ensure that the soil is sweet enough for the herbs to grow healthily.

Herbs grown indoors in pots need an adequate supply of water. Herbs grown in containers indoors do need to have more water then herbs that are otherwise grown in a garden, however do avoid drenching or sogging the roots of the herbs. Moistening the pebbles and soil and misting the plant’s foliage will help to keep the herbs growing in humid conditions that they will thrive on.

When growing herbs in pots you have the added advantage and freedom of moving them about as you please, including taking them outside. Annual herbs for example can be kept indoors all the time but, perennial herbs do better if they are placed outside during the summer months. All herbs should be brought inside or placed under cover before the first frost sets in so as to avoid damage to or loss of foliage. This rule however can be over looked when it comes to chives, mint and tarragon as these types of herbs will sprout additional growth after they are introduced to a light frost.

It’s fairly easy and fuss free growing herbs in pots and in maintaining an indoor herb garden. It also provides the wonderful convenience of having your herbs handy and within reach whenever you need them.

You should make a note to lightly feed your pot grown herbs periodically with a slow release fertilizer and re-potting your herbs annually for optimum health and vitality. Make a note to also remember to replant annuals each year and move perennials outdoors in summer. Plus, don’t be afraid to use your herbs as much as you want as well as harvest them occasionally. It’s no secret that pruning your plants will help to encourage new growth and this rule also applies to your herbs and herb garden plants. So do use your herbs in your recipes or pick and store them, or even give them away to your family and friends so they too can savor the fruits of your labor!
