Growing Rosemary

In this article, I am going to teach you about growing rosemary in your herb garden. Rosemary, as many of you may already know, is great with many different dishes. It is one of the most common herbs used in many dishes such as rosemary roasted turkey, dried cherries, pecans and rosemary brie en croute, leg’o lamb with lemon and rosemary, and numerous others. Contrary to what many of you think, rosemary is actually very easy to care for.

Here are a few simple tips on how to grow rosemary.

First and foremost, rosemary needs an abundant amount of sunlight. In choosing a spot in your garden to plant your rosemary on, make sure you choose the area that gets plenty of sunlight. If there is one thing rosemary loves, it is the warm sun.

Second, rosemary prefers light or sandy soil. On the other hand, it is tolerant to all types of soil as long as it is not water-logged, as this may cause the plant to drown and eventually just wither and die. Rosemary planted on sandy soil often results in smaller plants with a more fragrant scent.

Even if you live in a cold area, you can still grow rosemary on the ground all year round. Just make sure that it is planted on a sandy soil and that it gets 6-8 hours of sunlight everyday to guarantee its continued growth, despite the cold weather. You need to do the same thing when winter comes. You will have to make sure your rosemary plant still gets enough sunlight otherwise, it may just wither. This then brings me to my third tip.

Growing RosemaryIf you see that your rosemary plant dries out or that it does not look healthy anymore, simply chop off some unhealthy leaves so it can grow new ones. You may also prune it periodically a few times a year so it can grow lush new growth again. On the contrary, if the plant looks good, allow it to flourish.

So remember, as long as your rosemary plant is placed in sandy soil, or in compost or potting soil with good drainage, and that it is getting enough sun, it will surely grow beautifully.
