Growing Summer Squash
Summer squash is a great addition to your herb garden, which you can definitely use with your favorite summer squash herb salad recipe.
There are different types of summer squash that are usually classified according to appearance. Squash plants come in a variety of, shapes, and colors. Some of the more famous varieties are zucchini squash; which produce large crops with skin in varying shades of green; and yellow squash, which produce butterfly yellow elongated crops.
You can start by planting summer squash in a small pot. Its delicate roots are very sensitive to the soil’s temperature. Apparent with its name, summer squash is planted into warm soil. This means that you have to choose a sunny spot. Two weeks later, when the plant has slightly grown and the soil in your garden warms, you can then carefully transplant each summer squash plant into the garden.
Anticipating a hot and dry summer, it is best to provide your summer squash with sink pots for deep watering. You can place this pot just beside your summer squash. Make certain that you water the plants regularly, about twice a day. This allows for the proper absorption of the nutrients in the soil.
In addition, to provide your summer squash with the nutrients it needs, it is most advisable to use fertilizers. Bat Guano is your best option of fertilizer. Just make sure that when you buy the Bat Guano, choose the variety with a higher phosphorous level than nitrogen; otherwise, your summer squash will be all bush and no fruit.
Lastly, there is also a need for you to drive away squash bugs. The Bugs may destroy your plant and the fruits it will bear. To do this, you can use kelp meal as an organic pesticide. Just sprinkle kelp meal this around the plant in order to keep bugs away from your summer squash; as they hate the smell of kelp meal.
