How to Effectively Grow Basil in Your Herb Garden
Basil is one of the best herbs for household cooking. Growing a basil herb garden requires a temperate and tropical environment, as this herb requires abundant sunlight. The ideal climate to effectively grow this herb, is after spring.
You can jump start your very own basil garden by first preparing all your gardening supplies. Use pots and containers that provide proper drainage, and that are an appropriate size for your crop. You can start with small pots, then simply re-pot your basil when it’s fully grown. Use soils that allow water to escape, like top soil, as you may end up drowning your plants if you use compact soil.
Water your herbs not more than twice a day to hydrate them. Basil easily thrives so make sure you keep them separated from other herbs. They may end up competing for nutrients and may eventually lead to a decline of the weaker variety of herbs. Label your basil pots as herbs tend to look alike at times.
Make sure the soil’s pH level range is between 6.5-7.5. You can determine this by the use of pH devices readily available with your gardening or nursery kits. Check the soil’s pH level at least once a month to ensure that your crops are within the ideal pH meter range. If you would opt for fertilizers, always favour organic fertilizers; they are cheaper and healthier alternatives.
Once your basil herbs are fully grown, you can start harvesting them by merely picking the leaves. However, spare the little paired leaves; they will grow to replace those which you will be using for your meal preparation. Several pots of basil herbs can provide you a year-long supply of fresh basil leaves that you can use for all your culinary needs.
You need not have years of gardening experience to grow this type of herb as basil is very easy to grow. After you have successfully mastered basil gardening, start practicing your herb gardening skills for indoor gardening, to provide you with fresh herbs during the winter season.
