Seven Easiest Herbs to Grow in Your Garden
I love the instant flavor burst when using fresh herbs in my cooking. Even the most basic recipe stands up and takes a bow with the addition for freshly snipped mint, oregano, dill or any variety of culinary herbs.
Luckily, most herbs grow like "weeds" in even the most average soil. Lots of sun, and plenty of moisture will help your herb garden thrive. Mint, parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano and dill are some of the easiest ones to start with. They need little coaxing once planted. If you are starting with plants, instead of seeds, you can arrange them on the dirt (still in their pots) to "eyeball" your arrangement before committing them to the earth.
Regardless of the quality of the soil, a well drained garden spot is essential. I had the best luck planting mine in a raised bed, with the herbs nestled in their own cozy corner. There were a few exceptions. Oregano and basil were planted near the tomato plants for their benefits as companion plants in the garden. Colorful nasturtiums bordered the entire bed. Nasturtiums, as it turns out, are a lovely edible edition to any summer salad. Mint is an herb I would plant in it's own area, to avoid a massive takeover of the other herbs. A friend of mine advises putting mint in a clay pot buried in the corner of the garden.
Growing herbs needn't be intimidating. These seven tried and true herbs will yield a nice crop of lovely culinary goodness, right in your own backyard.
