Starting Your Very Own Urban Herb Garden
The urban cityscape has very limited space and with cramped surroundings. As such, growing your very own urban herb garden in this hostile environment may appear difficult. There is, however, no need to worry as this is not impossible with the help of urban herb gardening practices.
Herbs, unlike other types of plants, require nothing more than just a limited space for them to grow and thrive. You can reap the fruits of your labor, without worrying much about garden maintenance as the produce can be harvested within three weeks.
Starting your very own urban garden is easy. Your house’s porch, balcony, and even your window pane can be home to these lovely crops. Herbs can be planted and grown in clay pots, broken glasses, tea cups, and even in recycled plastic containers. Just make sure that they provide proper drainage as herbs require this along with ample exposure to sun (at least a minimum of six hours a day) for them to survive.
Although herbs can adapt to most soil types, it is still recommended that you use the type with natural humus content (animal dung) as this is high in nitrogen components, which serve as natural fertilizers to plants. Be careful not to crowd your herbs as this may hinder them from flourishing and may end up in an unhealthy competition between herbs.
Never forget to hydrate you plants as they love water so much. You can do this twice a day for proper moisture.
Feel free to harvest your herbs every now and then, because this encourages them to grow even more. Once they have grown out of their containers, you can start re-potting them, so they may reproduce more efficiently.
It’s recommended to use commercial organic matters with natural pesticides to keep the insects and weeds from damaging your herbs.
Do not forget to label them individually to avoid confusion as herbs may sometimes look alike.
