Tips for Creating an Herb Garden
Creating an herb garden is a fun activity that is also a great money saver. Many beginners face challenges when creating an herb garden. The keys to successful herb gardening are careful planning, vigilant maintenance and practice.
Planning is the most important aspect of herb gardening. Beginners should not start out with dozens of herbs, particularly if they don’t have any plans to use them. It is best to start with what you know you will use and add more as you become more experienced. Many herbs can be planted together either in the ground or in a large planter. However some herbs such as mint need to be on their own or they will take over and kill the other plants. Herbs can be planted 
directly into the soil, but most do best in planters. Many beginners use planters with potting soil since it is easier than figuring out the pH of your own soil.
Herbs cannot simply be planted and left alone. Many need to be started indoors and require careful maintenance. Watering is essential of course and will vary depending on the herb. Some herbs require additional measures such as fertilizer or various measures for best control. If you are gardening organically you will need to be extra vigilant in the care of your herbs.
Practice makes perfect, like many other things herb gardening takes time. It may take a few seasons to figure out what you want to plant and how to do it but in the end it will be worth it. With extra planning, careful maintenance and lots of practice herb gardening will become an enjoyable and money saving activity.
