Window Sill Herb Garden
To jumpstart your window sill herb garden, you first need to choose the herbs you want to plant. What I suggest is you pick herbs that you usually use for cooking, as this is where you will have the biggest use for them. Some of my favorites are oreganos, mints, chives, and rosemary.
After you have chosen what varieties of herbs you want to plant by your window sill, the next thing you will need to do is to buy these. You can buy an herb already growing; this is usually more convenient; you will no longer have a hard time growing them from seeds yourself, or you can also start from seeds if you prefer. The advantage of the latter is that you have more control over the quality of herbs that you grow. I know some who start from seeds all the time because they simply want to get their hands dirty, they sometimes even use this as bonding time with the kids. The decision depends on your preference.
Now, if you have decided to grow these herbs from seeds, here are a few steps that you need to follow:
First, you will need a seed tray, or several seed trays. This is very important because this will serve as an incubator for your new babies. You can use a pack of seed starter mix, potting soil, or even sand for the seed trays.
Second, you will need to water these seeds after planting them, but make sure to never let them sit in water, as this may drown them.
Third, these seeds will eventually sprout, so you will need to take the strongest plants and thin out the smallest ones. Their initial growth will create a map of roots.
Fourth, you will need to transfer these plants into a larger container so they can start growing properly.
The majority of herbs can grow on a window sill. One vital piece of information which you must always remember is that herbs need an abundant amount of light in order for them to grow. It is highly advised, as well, that you use artificial light, even at night, to provide appropriate nourishment for these herbs.
It is important that you put your plants on top of plates or place them inside bigger containers. The plates and containers actually have a dual purpose. They prevent the plant from sitting on top of water all the time, eventually rotting, and they also prevent damage to your window sill.
In addition, maintaining these herbs is simple because you only need to trim these once in a while to keep them in shape.
